Market selection

How to choose an export market for a new product

The biggest export market is not automatically the best first market. Start with where demand is visible, then check whether your product can reach buyers through a channel you can actually serve.

Use trade totals as a shortlist

Country-level exports are a useful demand signal for comparing destinations. They are not evidence that a specific importer bought from your factory, and they do not capture subnational demand such as Miami or South Florida.

Check the channel before committing

A product may move through distributors, specialty wholesalers, contractors, retailers, or marketplace sellers. The right first market is one where your product family and the reachable channel overlap, not simply the country with the largest total.

Turn the shortlist into a test

Pick one or two markets, write a clear buyer hypothesis, and run a small research batch. Compare the number of confirmed buyers, the freshness of their records, and the quality of reachable stakeholders before expanding spend.
