How to read customs shipment records for buyer research

Customs data is useful because it records a real movement of goods. It is easy to misuse because a filing is not the same thing as a purchase order, a contact, or a promise to switch suppliers.

Start with the time window

The latest shipment and the trailing twelve-month total answer different questions. The latest shipment indicates recency; the trailing total indicates whether there is enough repeated activity to judge a pattern.

Treat product descriptions as clues

Descriptions often contain the buyer's own trade vocabulary, but they can be abbreviated, noisy, or generic. Match several terms and, when the category matters, use an HS heading as a wider proxy rather than pretending one code defines the whole product family.

Read supplier concentration and coverage together

A buyer with one dominant supplier may have a clear incumbent to displace, while also carrying a single-source risk. Coverage tells you how much of the buyer's total shipment volume the visible supplier rows account for. Low coverage should lower confidence, not increase speculation.
